A Living Gallery of Perak’s Heritage
Nestled within a historic bungalow in the heart of Ipoh, Serai Bungalow is more than a restaurant. It is a celebration of Perak’s cultural identity, craftsmanship and stories that have shaped generations. Our design approach sought to respectfully preserve the character of the existing heritage building while weaving in the rich traditions of Perak’s most treasured handicrafts and industries.
Inspired by the artistry of Labu Sayong, the intricate geometry of Kelarai weaving, the legacy of Perak’s tin mining industry (Bijih Timah), and the timeless beauty of Batik Terap Perak, every space within the bungalow has been thoughtfully curated to tell a different chapter of the state’s history. Rather than treating these elements as mere decorative features, they become part of the architectural narrative. Embedded into materials, patterns, textures, lighting, and spatial experiences throughout the building.
As guests move from one room to another, they are invited on a journey through Perak’s heritage. Each dining area showcases a unique story, transforming the restaurant into an immersive gallery where culture, craftsmanship, and hospitality coexist. Traditional motifs are reinterpreted through contemporary design, creating an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and relevant to today's generation.
The project reflects our belief that interior design can be a powerful medium for cultural preservation. By integrating local craftsmanship into the dining experience, Serai Bungalow becomes a platform that honours artisans, celebrates local identity, and keeps Perak’s heritage alive for future generations.
More than a destination for food, Serai Bungalow stands as a living cultural gallery. Where every corner tells a story, every detail carries meaning, and every visit reconnects guests with the soul of Perak.
